Wednesday after a UTAR Ball meeting...I went for the FAS Dance Club Showcase. Which reminds me...I still owe Nicholas Rm2! Oopz...

First comment:
The theme was "Dance To No Border"
Apatu???
Badly phrased and with no proper structure. Geez!

By the way, I only went because I thought I could pick some talented dancers for UTAR Ball. I NEED tango dancers and sexy Gypsy dancers...it's starting to look like it'll be easier to find one dancing cat!

Anyways...when I got in and saw the stage, my first thought was, "WTF is that??"
Mahjong paper covering the wall partially (and since mahjong paper is thin you can see the wall anyways!) and there's this graffitied bucket turned upside down at the front of the stage. The colours didn't match and it looked way way way tacky. Guess what the lighting consisted off?

They took out the grills from the overhead lights and took most out. Others they covered with yellow glass paper so it had a yellowish effect. It looked like some ghetto. Either that or someone forgot to pay the electricity bill. Then they had the smart idea of projecting the Windows Media Player vizualizations on the wall. The end result? Ghetto disco. A really tacky ugly ghetto disco. I was not impressed. *shrugs*

Then came the dancing. It was split into three bits. Hip Hop (du-oh!), Traditional (sigh) and Ballroom (uh-huh!). They made it so cheesy. Imagine ballroom in a psychedelic ghetto. And the projected images were so faint the effect wasn't even nice.

The "storyline" (WTF??) was three friends who excelled (laughs loudly) in diff areas of dance were quarelling to see who was better. So we were treated to a lot of cheesy stupid scenes where the dancers all come in before the end of the dance, bump them off, do their own dance before the cycle begins again. Frankly, it was boring.

The dances were all done to hip hop beats so it went really badly with the two other genres. The dancers weren't good at all. The hip hoppers weren't half bad but hip hop and breakdance is damned the sien adi so no diff anyways! The ballroom dancers lacked fire, flair and the connection that is so essential to tango and salsa. They just looked like a bunch of posers. I'm sorry, being honest here!

The traditional dancers...did not look like they knew what they were doing. It looked awkward and fake. Traditional dance is supposed to be elegant and graceful.... *sigh* It was painful to watch after a while. The emcees...oh GOD!!! Annoying giler!! But they brought the crowd...at least until they started doing the stupid "Mexican Wave" thingy with hands and FEET! Siao wan! It sorta went downhill after that. Way way WAY downhill....

I did find some dancer but they'll need a heck of a lot of work before they are considered ready for UTAR Ball performance! Ickz!

Just my two cents cos I cannot understand why some people called it a success. I felt it was contrived, messy, looked very high school (wait...even our Eng Week dramas were better!) and nothing much to shout about.

*shrugs*

But kudos for the effort!
