The story is basically about Devdas (SRK) who is extremely rich and is sent off to London to study. He leaves behind his childhood friend Paro (Aish) who loves him with all her heart. Years later, he returns and the first person he goes to see is Paro...thus making his mum pretty pissed and jealous. Of course his sister-in-law has to play the poisonous snake and cause probz.

So, Devdas's mum deliberately humiliates Paro's mother by giving her the hope that Devdas would marry Paro. To which, Paro's mother retaliates by saying even though Devdas loves Paro, he will never have her, for she will marry a man much much richer than this family and Devdas will suffer.

Devdas, being a spoilt ass does a lot of stupid things, prompting Paro to marry another. True enough he is suffering for being the ass that he is...so he becomes a bigger ass by turning to alcohol and prostitutes for comfort. He meets Chandramukhi (Madhuri), the most famous courtesan of all (think Satine) who falls in love with him and cares for him. But of course he cannot return her love cos he's completely hung up on Paro.

This show has the saddest ending ever ever ever and that's what makes it really wonderful. *sighs*
